Lest we forget

Julia was very interested in all that she was learning at school about Remembrance Day. We have gone to the local veterans' parade before, and I've shown her the cenotaph in Sarnia, Southhampton and in Aurora. But this year, she was selected to remember the day in a special way.

Julia came home last Monday, excited to tell me that 8 Gr. 1 students were going to be chosen was chosen to read at the Remembrance Day liturgy at school. When we were going through her backpack to do homework, we discovered that she had been selected. She was going to be the first one to read.

This is her passage:
Today we remember the brave solidiers who fought in war.
We wear a poppy to remember and pray for peace in the world.
She had it memorized the first night.

We got our poppies on Saturday and she was very proud to wear hers. She was even able to tell me that we had to wear it on our left side, above our hearts.

We went to the Remembrance Day parade in Aurora on Sunday. She had to be right up front to see the pipers march down the street - you can see her in the little pink jacket, not wanting to miss a moment. She ran back to tell me that they sounded like the piper from the beach at Southhampton.

I was pleased to be able to go the liturgy. The gym was filled with JK to Gr 4 classes, all dressed in red. I was so proud to watch her open the liturgy with her passage.

I even managed to get a little video clip on my camera - first time for everything. I always think Julia is so tall, but I could barely see her head above the podium - just her dark hair and the red hair band she had chosen for the day, but I could hear her just fine.

Julia looks lovely in her red! And her interest in our war heroes is so "her".
Coincidentally, Bryanna was performing in her school's junior choir at the Remembrance Day assembly at the same time in almost the exact same outfit - wish I had taken pictures too!

Wow what a wonderful honour. We had a wonderful assembly as well and the intermediate classes 7 & 8 did the whole thing and my class did a choral reading. I was so proud. What a wonderful memory and it is so important that we not let our kids forget all those who have served and continue to serve our country so we can be free.

Well done girls,
Shauna
